History of Hobby Horses
Hobby horse riding (hobby horsing) has existed for centuries as a fun children’s activity for movement and play. Hobby horses first appeared in paintings during the 16th century. Hobby horses were featured in a Mother Goose Nursery Rhyme that has been published in Mother Goose Nursery Rhyme books
for over 100 years and sung by generations of children. Hobby horses, in the past, were used in traveling plays and shows across Europe, Asia, and North America.
Today, Finland leads the hobby horse way with large enthusiastic hobby horsing events that are now spreading across Europe. Hobby horsing enthusiasts often create their own custom hobby horses, give their horses names similar to racehorses, engage in hobby horsing demonstrations and choreograph hobby horse dance movements to songs.
Hobby Horse events are on the rise across Europe and America with large hobby horsing events taking place in the form of state and national competitions. Contestants at these events put on dressage demonstrations that are judged by form and in the choreography presented.
Hobby Horsing USA encourages, along with the learning of the locomotor skills and the various dances connected to those movements, all types of games, activities, and creative adaptations that students can make to our songs as well as any songs they wish to use. We also encourage fun and playful competitions ranging from dressage to rodeo and more that are both for individuals as well as teams.
