Hobby Horsing USA’s Course Information by Lesson
Hobby Horse lessons are numbered in the order we suggest that they be presented, but teachers can choose any lesson at any time to correspond to their curriculum and the locomotor skill they are wanting students to perform.
Warm Up Lesson – This lesson features our Hobby Horse warm up song called I’m a Hobby Horser. Play the song and have the students walk around the perimeter of the room (all in the same direction) to the rhythm of the music. Later this lesson can be used for many other locomotor skills to be part of the warmup.
Lesson 1 – Walking – This lesson features the Hobby Horse Circle Walk Song that directs students to playfully walk in a circle, as a group, and use a variety of walks including heel toe, penguin, toe heel, tippy toe, sumo, heels only, marching and sloth.
Lesson 2 – Trotting – This lesson features the Hobby Horse On the Line Trotting Song that directs students to trot in place, move forward and backwards, move at diagonals, and trot fast and slow.
Lesson 3 – Prancing – This lesson features the Hobby Horse On the Line Prancing Song that directs students to prance in place, move forward and backwards, and move at diagonals.
Lesson 4 – Stationary Movements – This lesson features the Hobby Horse Stationary Fun Song that directs students to perform a variety of stationary movements including pendulums, rocking horses, “Yee Haws” and stomps.
Lesson 5 – Combination Locomotor Skills Activity #1 – this lesson features Hobby Horse Combination Song #1 – This song directs students to combine a variety of locomotor knowledge for walking, trotting, prancing and stationary movements.
Lesson 6 – Leaping – Step, Step, Leap, and Hold – This lesson features Hobby Horse Leaping Over the Puddle Song that demonstrates and engages students in the step, step, leap and hold style of leaping. Leaping by alternating lead foot.
Lesson 7 – Leap, Land, and Close – This lesson features Hobby Horse Lily Pad Leaping Circle Song that demonstrates and engages students in the leap, land, close style of leaping. Leaping with the same lead foot.
Lesson 8 – Jumping – This lesson features Hobby Horse Cowboy Ken Jumping Song that will direct students to use a variety of jumps including 2-foot jumps, mogul jumps, bell jumps, scissor jumps and straddle jumps. Students move side to side, forward and back, and more.
Lesson 9 – Combination Locomotor Skill Activity #2 – This lesson features Hobby Horse Combination Song #2. This song directs students to combine a variety of locomotor knowledge for leaping and jumping.
Lesson 10 – Sliding – This lesson features Hobby Horse Sliding Circle Song that teaches a variety of sliding skills (skating, side to side & diagonals) through a progression of movements.
Lesson 11 – Galloping – This lesson features the Hobby Horse Galloping Circle Song that directs students with the fundamentals of galloping and then galloping changing lead feet. Students learn the step, slide, step; step, step, trot, gallop and gallop higher methods.
Lesson 12 – Combination Locomotor Skills Activity – This lesson features the Hobby Horse Combination Song #3. This song combines a variety of locomotor skills including sliding, galloping, trotting, prancing, jumping, leaping and more.
Lesson 13 – Hopping – This lesson features Hobby Horse A Hopping We Will Go Song that directs students to hop in a variety of ways including changing feet, to the right and left, and forward and back.
Lesson 14 – Skipping Step-Hop Method – This lesson features Hobby Horse Step-Hop Skipping Song that teaches and directs students to learn how to skip using the Step-Hop method.
Lesson 15 – Skipping March Higher Method – This lesson features Hobby Horse March Higher Skipping Song that teaches and directs students to learn how to skip using the March Higher method.
Lesson 16 – Combination Locomotor Skill Activity #4 – This lesson features the Hobby Horse Combination Song #4 – This song combines a variety of locomotor skills including hopping, skipping, galloping, trotting, prancing and more.
Lesson 17 – The Hobby Horse Slide – This lesson features our signature line dance, Students will learn the locomotor skills needed to perform the choreography to the music. Locomotor skills include shuffle steps, sumo walks, grapevines, spinning grapevine, and more.
Lesson 18 – Advanced Walking –This lesson features advanced walking skills, including grapevine, march, lunge, toe heel walking, open the gate, close the gate and more used in this locomotor skill reinforcement song – Advanced Circle Walk Song #1.
Lesson 19 – Advanced Walking – Students will be engaged in learning complicated walking choreography in the second reinforcement song –Advanced Circle Walk Song #2. Skills that are taught include: grape vines, open the gate, close the gate, zombie walk, mummy walk, straight leg kickbacks, lunges, high lunges and more.
Lesson 20- Advanced Trotting – Advanced Skills – This lesson features advanced trotting movement skills supported by our Advanced on the Line Trotting Song. Students will enjoy complicated trotting locomotor skills choreographed to a fun song featuring moving forward and back, side to side, boxer shuffles, trot / hop combinations and syncopated Cha Cha Cha trotting pattern.
Lesson 21- Advanced Leaping – This lesson features leaping and advanced leaping skills supported by choreography to an engaging song the Advanced Fun Leaping Song. Students will start with some basic leaping movements and then advance to leap ball changes, diagonal leaps and more.
Lesson 22 – Advanced Jumping – This is an advanced jumping lesson featuring advanced jumping skills combined in the choreography of our Cowboy Ken Advanced Jumping Song. Students will be instructed to march, jump, bell jump, scissor jump, straddle jump, X jump, squat jump and more.
Lesson 23 – Advanced Sliding – This lesson features advanced sliding skills choreographed to our song Advanced Sliding Song. Students will use Side-taps, K slides, Basketball Guard, Olympic Speed Skater, Test the Ice slides and more.
Lesson 24- Advanced Galloping – This galloping lesson features galloping locomotor skills choreographed to our Advanced Galloping Fun Song. Students will enjoy galloping around in a circle while they change their lead foot. This song starts slower but then gets faster and more challenging. Students will enjoy galloping along in a fun aerobic galloping exercise.
Lesson 25 – Advanced Hopping – This lesson incorporates more advanced hopping skills into the choreography to our song Advanced Hopping Song. Included are right and left hops, forward and back hops, combinations of hops and shuffle steps, patterned hops and more.
Lesson 26 – Advanced Skipping – This lesson features advanced skipping skills that students will use in the choreography to our song Advanced Skipping Song. Students will be skipping in place, forward and back, side to side, out and in, grapevines, single, single doubles and more.
Lesson 27 – Let’s Horse Around– Students will follow along with our locomotor skills featured in various Hobby Horse lessons with a fun line dance called Let’s Horse Around. There are different versions/modifications that can be taught so that every level will enjoy “Let’s Horse Around.”
